What is a Lateral Officer?
A Police Officer - Lateral is an experienced peace officer who is not required to attend the Police Academy and is assigned to a Field Training Officer upon being hired.
In-State Laterals

Out-of-State Laterals
Police officers from across the country can decide to relocate their careers to the Yuba City Police Department. Yuba City, with a population of just over 69,000, is located 41 miles north of the state capital, Sacramento, at the crossroads of Highway 99 and Highway 20, in the central part of the Sacramento Valley. Nestled between the famous Sutter Buttes mountain range and the picturesque Feather River, and just a short drive north of Sacramento, the City of Yuba City acts as the regional center for the 120,000 people that live within a 15-minute drive.
How does a Lateral join the Yuba City PD?
A Police Officer - Lateral must successfully complete the Field Training Program. The length of training will be dependent on an incumbent’s performance as determined by the police training staff.

Police Officers conduct preliminary crime scene investigations, prepare reports and work with citizens and youth in a variety of crime prevention and safety programs. Minimum Qualifications
Education: Equivalent to the completion of one year of recognized college coursework, preferably in Administration of Justice, Criminal Justice, or closely related field.
Experience: One year of recent, full-time police officer experience in a recognized local law enforcement agency or one year of Level I reserve experience in the Yuba City Police Department. (Recent is defined as all or part of the experience has been within the last three years).
Licenses and/or Certifications Required:
Possession of or the ability to obtain an appropriate, valid State of California driver's license and possession of a valid State of California POST Academy completion/Basic Certificate or equivalent which has been accepted by the State of California.
